The best college softball pitchers of all time
Cat Osterman
Texas — 2002-03, 2005-06
Cat Osterman is considered one of the greatest pitchers in history, and she’s still making a significant impact on softball today. She has won three National Player of the Year Awards and two Honda Awards, both while setting records for strikeouts and perfect games.
Monica Abbott
Tennessee — 2004-2007
Next up is Monica Abbott, another pitcher on this list who I suspect will not be arguable. Abbott is the NCAA strikeout king with 2,440 strikeouts, and she also still holds the record for most strikeouts in a single season with 724.
Abbott won the 2007 National Player of the Year award and the Honda Award, which is given to the best female college baseball player. She has also accumulated a number of victories and shutouts in her career, making her one of the greatest pitchers in history.
Jennie Finch
Arizona — 1999-2002
Jennie Finch is one of the most accomplished pitchers in history, having won a national championship in 2001. Other nearly perfect pitchers on this list, like Aroldis Chapman and Max Scherzer, did not achieve the same level of success.
Finch is one of the most well-known and successful softball players in history. She has won two Honda Awards, and set the record for most consecutive wins in 2001.
Nancy Evans
Arizona — 1994-95, 1997-98
Arizona pitcher Trevor Evans joins the list of collegiate athletes who have won three national championships. Evans, like Finch, also did something no one else on this list accomplished as a collegiate athlete – winning three national championships.
In spite of her 124-8 career pitching record, which still remains the NCAA softball history record, it was her ERA and wins that sealed the deal for me.
Lisa Fernandez
UCLA — 1990-1993
These pitchers are not ranked in any particular order, and we would never forget Lisa Fernandez. She is an absolute legend who won the Honda award four times at UCLA. That is pure domination.
Lisa Fernandez, a pitcher for the Boston Bruins, won four Honda Awards in 2017. These awards are given to the best players in different sports leagues throughout the United States. Among her other accolades that year were being named Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year and winning the Honda Broderick Cup – which is given to “the best collegiate softball player.”
Michele Granger
California — 1990-1993
Michele Granger did not win any Honda Awards, but she is still one of the best college pitchers ever. She holds the NCAA record for most career no-hitters, with 25.
When looking at names like Fernandez and Granger, it’s important to consider their era. However, she still dominated during this time period. She broke the strikeout record in her career with 1,640 strikeouts and had a .46 ERA.
Danielle Lawrie
Washington — 2006-07, 2009-10
Danielle Lawrie, a pitcher for the Washington Huskies softball team, is one of the best NCAA Division I softball pitchers in history. She has a successful career at Washington, where she has led her team to several championships. Danielle Lawrie is an excellent pitcher who will be remembered as one of the best in Division I softball history.
In 2009, Lawrie struck out 521 batters and won the Honda award twice. She also led her team to Washington’s first national title that year.
Courtney Blades
Nicholls State — 1997-98
Southern Mississippi — 1999-2000
Courtney Blades from Southern Mississippi was one of the most successful pitchers in NCAA Division I history. She broke Granger’s previous record for strikeouts and led Southern Miss to the Women’s College World Series.
She finished the season with a total of 663 strikeouts, which brought her career total up to 1,773. This record was held until 2006.
Keilani Ricketts
Oklahoma — 2010-2013
Keilani Ricketts, an ace pitcher from Oklahoma, takes a spot on the list. She won back-to-back National player of the year honors and back-to-back Honda Awards.
For 2013, she was named the best collegiate athlete by the Honda Broderick Cup.
Rachel Garcia
UCLA — 2017-19, 2021
Rachel Garcia, a pitcher for the UCLA Bruins, is considered one of the best pitchers in the NCAA.
Garcia has been a dominant player in the batters box, but she is also UCLA’s ace and was instrumental in helping the Bruins win back-to-back Honda Awards.
Alicia Hollowell
Arizona — 2003-2006
Alicia Hollowell is a pitcher for the Arizona Wildcats. She was on the team that won the WCWS in 2018 and she is one of their best pitchers.
Hollowell, who won a national title with the Wildcats in 2006, finished with an ERA of .87 in a more modern era. He racked up 1768 strikeouts over his career.
She is one of the most successful pitchers in Arizona history, leading all pitchers in career wins, strikeouts, shutouts, innings pitched and strikeout ratio.
These ten women are all deserving of recognition for their hard work and dedication to their field.
Each of these women has made a significant impact on their respective fields, and have led their teams to success. They are all highly respected and deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments.
Many softball fans who read our list of honorable mention players were surprised to learn that Angela Tincher made the cut. She was not included on the initial list, but her performance in 2017 warranted an honorable mention.
After publishing our first list of honorable mention players, many softball fans contacted us to say that Angela Tincher’s name came up more than any other. Her 2017 season was impressive enough to earn her a place on this second list, even though she did not make the initial cutoff for inclusion.
Tincher is one of the best pitchers in history, ranking No. 3 all-time in strikeouts and No. 2 in strikeouts per seven innings.
In NCAA competition, Tincher is eighth in no-hitters. She threw one against the U.S. Olympic team at Virginia Tech in an impressive performance.
Here are the 11 best college softball pitchers of all time, including Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch and Lisa Fernandez.
